3rd New Jersey Infantry, Torbert’s Brigade - Valedictorian in 1855 at LaFayette College, Pennsylvania. Published two books on American law before war. Led his regiment in 30 engagements during the Civil War. On July 2, 1863, his regiment and corps marched 35 miles to help secure the Union left. Appointed Judge Advocate General in February 1865.
