Caption
Ashes from the fireplace were collected and dumped in this hopper. Water poured through the ashes produced lye which was collected from the drain at the bottom. The lye was mixed with old fat and meat drippings to make soap. Lye soap was then used to wash whatever needed washing, people or clothes.
