Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, John Taylor, and Willard Richards were in this upstairs room of the Carthage jail when a mob stormed it shortly after five o'clock. The mob burst through the door "and began the work of death, while others fired in through the open windows. . . . A shower of balls was pouring through all parts of the room, many of which lodged in the ceiling" (History of the Church, 6:617). Joseph and Hyrum were killed, John Taylor was seriously wounded, and Willard Richards was left unharmed.
