(1841-1920) Baltimore Turnpike. Wert was an adventurous teacher. He had reported on John brown from Kansas. He scouted on behalf of Union generals at Gettysburg. After the battle, on Culp’s Hill he discovered a soldier’s remains accompanied by pieces of a photograph. He wondered "what aching heart of a wife, or mother, or child . . . they represented."
