This is the site of the Bear River Massacre battle that occurred on Jan. 29, 1863, between a band of Northwestern Shoshone Indians and some 280 federal troops from newly founded Camp Douglas in Salt Lake City commanded by Colonel Patrick E. Connor. The battle was prompted by harassment of overland travelers, settlers and miners by the Indians, whose traditional lands were rapidly being preempted by whites. Some 250 Indians men, women and children were killed along with some 14 soldiers.
