Frederic Ward Putnam was given the name of "Father of American Archaeology" because of his efforts to define a scientific method for American archaeology. He became the curator of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology in 1875. He purchased the Serpent Mound and turned it into a public park.
