This is one my favorite photos that has been copied many times. This is the Hastings Cutoff Trail as it looked in 1961 when we crossed it laying out a proposed I-80 alignment. The trail is heading for Silver Island Point before it bends toward Floating Island. Note the two wider tracks on the right lower corner. These are the Jeep tracks of Pro. Webb during his 1958 trek following the trail to Pilot Peak. Our trackmaster tracks are on the bottom left hand corner. The brown circles are what I call clich islands formed by thin layers on the flats of calcium carbonate.
