Each mound was built over the site of a charnel house, or burial shrine, After a number of people had ben cremated and buried inside the building, it was razed and a mound was constructed to cover the graves.
The mound on this site was removed during an archeological research project, and the low wooden posts mark the exact outline of the charnel house that stood here approximately 2,000 years ago. Although none of the original structure remains, archeologists have learned a great deal about it from evidence in the ground. The construction details illustrated here are fairly typical of such buildings.
