Cleveland Area, Idaho
This is the Cleveland area where the emigrants camped on Aug. 13, by the river on the lower right side. The hot springs that they mentioned is in the upper left hand corner of the photo.
Cleveland Hot Springs
These are the Cleveland Hot Springs by the Oneida Narrows & Bear River. The Bidwell Party camped just east of here on the Bear River on the night of August 13, 1841. The next morning they past these hot springs which James John mentions in his diary. "August 14th, - This morning we passed by a hot spring near the encampment. It is constantly boiling and smoking and is strongly impregnated with soda." This author believes they past by the left side of the spring in the left center of the photo. There appears to be an old trail running by the spring. This trail was probably first used by the Indians and Mountain Men to circumvent the narrows.

August 13, 1841

The 13 AUGUST CAMPSITE was on the river by the narrows. James John described the campsite:

"This morning we passed by a hot spring near the encampment it is constantly boiling and smoking and is strongly impregnated with soda. We traveled about 15 miles today over hills and mountains and encamped on a small brook about 4 miles from the river." This hot spring can be seen on the left side of US 34, just after entering the highway.
